Download skin from the link provided below
Go to Minecraft.net > Click profile > Browse your new Skin
Upload image
Done and enjoy new skin

For unofficial Minecraft versions 1.7.10 and higher:

Download and rename it to steve.png.
Press 2 buttons WIN + R, Go to %AppData%.minecraft.
Inside there will be a file (version of the game) .jar, Open with WinRAR or 7Zip.
Go to the folders: assets> minecraft> textures> entity.
Drop and move the steve.png file into this folder.
Enjoy the new look

Installation on unofficial Minecraft versions 1.5.2-1.7.10:

Download and rename it to char.png.
Press 2 buttons WIN + R, Go to %AppData%.minecraft.
Inside there will be a file (version of the game) .jar, Open with WinRAR or 7Zip.
Open the mob folder. Drop and move the char.png file into this folder.
Done and enjoy new skin
