Minecraft Color Codes, also known as Minecraft Formatting Codes, allows any user to add colors and modifications to text directly in Minecraft. The color codes are from &0-9 and &a-f. Write them in front of your text. Messages sent from the server to the client can contain color codes, which allow coloring of text for various purposes.

Minecraft Color Codes

A section sign (§) followed by a hex digit in the message tells the client to switch colors while displaying text. Moreover, text can be formatted using the § symbol followed by a character. You can add various colors in books, command blocks, server names, server welcome messages (motd), signs, world names, and even in players names! It can be very useful if you are a server owner wanting to get more attention from your users, for example.

Color & Formatting Codes

It is now very easy to customize your text in configuration files or in-game by using these color and formatting codes!

§rcan be used to reset all texts format beyond it, e.g.§mXXX§rYYYdisplays as XXXYYY

§a u00A7a “green”

§3 u00A73 “dark_aqua”
§1 u00A71 “dark_blue”
§9 u00A79 “blue”
§d u00A7d “light_purple”
§5 u00A75 “dark_purple”
§f u00A7f “white”
§7 u00A77 “gray”
§8 u00A78 “dark_gray”

Typing

To enter “§” on Windows with most keyboards typeAlt+21, orAlt+0167(In both cases, you must use the Number Pad). On a Mac US keyboard,⌥ Option+6(⌥ Option+5for US Extended). On Linux with the compose key activated, typeComposeso.

Alternatively, you can copy the character from this page, and pressCtrl+Vto paste the character into a book. The “&” symbols might not work properly in the Minecraft chat bar or Command Block GUI. Try using “§” instead.

Server MOTD Colors

In order to get a colored or formatted multiplayer server MOTD you need to put u00A7 instead of the §. So for example, §5 would turn into u00A75. The full list of them is listed above in “MOTD Color Code”. You can use colors in conjunction with formatting. You must do the formatting after the color.

Almost all Minecraft servers are using formatting and color codes in their welcome texts, so don’t hesitate to create your own customized motd so that it attracts more players! It can be useful to promote a new game or update or to inform your potential players about something important.
