What This Mod Does

The VanillaFoodPantry mod (VFP for short) adds new uses for standard Minecraft crops and farm animals. We’ve tried to give many vanilla items, even odd-ball ones like poisonous potatoes, a new food-related use and therefore a reason for you to keep it. A few items even work as alternate sources of brewing ingredients such as spidereye and magma cream. VFP also gives you more ways to store standard foods and potions in bulk, as you might in a real-world extended pantry.

Vanilla Food Pantry 1.16.5,1.15.2,1.14.4 and 1.13.2 is a mod that adds new utilities to the vast majority of crops, animals and predefined foods of the game, so that we can make new types of foods, which depending on their ingredients, and how elaborate these food products are, will more or less cure our character. A good amount of new foods and crop utilities.

It is a mod that adds a lot of new manufacturing recipes and new processes to make certain foods, as well as new minerals and objects to make food and potions, so it will be a good idea to use the functionalities offered by Just Enough Items to know how to manufacture the various elements offered by the mod.

Target Audience

The mod’s target audience is anyone who plays Minecraft for its farms and food crafting, particularly if you play in peaceful or easy modes and could use alternate sources of experience points (Xp) besides mining. This mod lets you gain experience points from the act of making food. If you like crafting non-trivial food recipes, this mod is for you. A good companion mod for VFP would be “Harder Peaceful” (1.8) or “Hunger In Peace” (1.8.9-1.12.2); both add hunger to the peaceful survival mode, allowing you to farm, mine, and build unmolested by murderous mobs.

Getting Started – User Guide [mc 1.12]

You should read the sections below to get an idea of how the mod is structured and how the food recipes are designed so you can plan how to integrate VFP with your existing resources and game setup. The spoiler sections also include information on many of the non-food items you’re going to need to craft many of the recipes. Use the various images below along with an extension like NEI (MC1.8) or JEI (MC1.8.9+) to get the full catalog of recipes.

Read the chart in spoiler below for an idea of available food categories and their health values.

Many of the items are representative of a set of foods. For instance, VFP has four kinds of egg pies (top row) but all of them have the same food and saturation values so only one general “egg pie” icon is shown below.

The heftiest foods are egg pies, specialty breads (like muscle bread, apple bread), and heavy stews (like fish chowder or ham hocks stew). Next are the meals (like chicken nuggets and fries), cream soups, stuffed potatoes, sandwiches, and various new meats. Apple milk drink is also very good, replenishing up to 8 food points.

Items like muscle eggs and golden sugar give you other bonus side-effects like a speed or strength boost for a short time. Milk, cream, and cream soups also retain the curative effects of a milk bucket.

At the end of the food scale are most of the “junk” foods like cookies, taffy, fudge, iceees, and gelos. Small portions are also at this level; items like a single fried chicken nugget, or a roasted sunflower seed serving.

Additives and Activators

Additives and activators are little helper or agent ingredients, you need for the main food recipes. Agent ingredients are rarely edible but serve to make the various recipes unique and non-conflicting with other food mods. Most of the time they also make the recipes a teensy bit more realistic. You will need to figure out how to farm for and craft the main agent ingredients before you can complete most of the mod’s other recipes. But unless you’re just starting out, you probably have most of the required ingredients stashed somewhere (check those junk chests).

Below is a simple schematic of how the basic recipe pipeline works: you craft agents(1) for use in basic ingredient recipes(2). Those basic ingredients are the main building blocks for the majority of actual food stuffs(3) you make to consume.

The main additives and activator agents in VFP (left to right): drying agent, leavening, fizz, curdling agent, what-what powder, enzyme extractor, and jungle-juju juice.

  • Drying agent is used to create food powders, flour, and other powder-like ingredients.
  • Leavening is used to create doughs for breads, pies, and dumplings.
  • Fizz provides the caffeinated sugar buzz required for fizzy sugar drinks and tonics.
  • Curdling agent is used for soft cheese and yogurts.
  • What-What powder is an activator used to extract the JuJu essence from jungle vines and other items.
  • Enzyme extractor is used to obtain rennet from plant sources for cheese making if you prefer not to kill baby cows for calf stomach lining drops. It is also used to purge zombie flesh.
  • Jungle-JuJu juice is a concoction used to craft items like poisonous potatoes and rotten flesh.

Below are the recipes for the two simplest agent ingredients. You can use any standard seed (wheat, melon, pumpkin, beets) in any combination for these recipes.

Unprocessed drying agent. Smelt it to get usable drying agent.

Leavening agent. You can use it immediately.

Some agent ingredients are more complex and require other additives themselves; for example what-what activator powder is used by many other recipes and its recipe requires that you’ve already made or acquired some drying agent.

Crafting what-what powder requires some drying agent.

Crafting jungle-juju juice requires some what-what powder.

 So does enzyme extraction agent.

Making curdling agent from saplings needs other agents.

Flour and Dough

Most of the baked goods in the mod require flour or dough. Our flour is made from crafting wheat with some drying agent and our simple dough is made from crafting flour, leavening, and a bit o’ water. VFP will also work with any other food mod’s flour and dough provided those items are registered under the “foodFlour” and “foodDough” ids in the Forge registry. Most of the recipes using dough or flour create raw or unbaked items that you must smelt to get the final edible product; this is intentional as it lets you gain Xp if you smelt batches of sufficient size.

Our flour requires some wheat and drying agent.

Our dough requires flour, leavening, and a bit o’ water.

Example: enriched bread from dough, ready for baking.

Example: molasses cookies from flour, ready for eating.

Flour and dough are used for more complex recipes beside simple bread or cookies. You will need dough for egg pies, stuffed rolls, specialty breads, patties, stews, and other food stuffs.

Example: making a hefty egg pie with dough.

Portions

Using a bucket of milk as a substitute for a small amount of milk in something like a bread recipe is odd. Moreover, items like steaks and pork-chops are a pretty expensive way to make a single sandwich considering you have to kill a cow or pig just to get a couple pieces of it. VFP uses the idea of portions in many of its recipes to allow you to combine less expensive resources (like wheat and vegetables) with more expensive ones (like anything that requires clobbering animals) to make equal or more nutritious food than those items standalone.

Liquids, 3 sizes.  Meats and bones, 2 sizes

Liquid Portions

The smallest water portion is called a bit o’ water; the smallest milk portion is called a bit o’ milk. You can get 32 bits or 4 bottles from a bucket of either liquid.

Example: a bucket of water yields 32 bits o’ water.

Example: a bucket of milk yields 4 bottles of milk.

Item Portions

The smallest portion of meat is called a bit o’ raw <meat_name>; for example, a portion of chicken would be a bit o’ raw chicken. You get bits of meat by crafting the standard raw meat item with a flint cutter. A flint cutter is crafted like shears, but with flint. Each cutter has 16 uses. A flint cutter is not a generic held tool, you use it only for crafting.

A flint cutter (has 16 uses before “broken”) [mc-1.12 recipe, see JEI for your mod’s specific version]

Portioning a mutton chop with a cutter into 8 bits o’ raw mutton.

Using bits o’ raw pork to make meat-stuffed rolls.

Small Bones

You can now get small bones from some animals, in particular bats, chickens, and rabbits. You get the bones from crafting as shown below or as a random drop from the animals. VFP has a couple of new uses for bones; the most important is as the main ingredient for gelatin powder which you need to make edible gelos. You can also craft 2 small bones into a standard Minecraft bone meal.

Crafting small bones from raw chicken (or rabbit) and drying agent.

Use small bones to make bonemeal, gelatin powder, or big bones.

 or

Food Powders

Food powders are dehydrated portions of items like pumpkins, melons, and milk. Most food powders derive from a single source item, but some are compound powders and some are crafted from multiple source items. Food powders are central to many of the multi-flavored VFP foods like gelos, milk drinks, and cream soups where you use a food powder to create a “flavored” variant of a base recipe. There is a food powder for just about every standard food item and food powders for other items for which VFP has introduced a new food-related use. Some VFP sub-mods provide many new compound powders called “mixes” for even more recipes.

Crafting a simple food powder is straightforward; the recipe always uses one drying agent and one or more of the item being dried. Below are some of the VFP food powders for standard Minecraft items (there is also some support for other third-party mod foods).

-or-  Simple powder- one item is dried for 1 or more powder portions.

-or-  Simple powder- multiples of an item are dried for 1 powder portion.

Some powders are complex powders that you craft from multiple distinct ingredients in varied amounts. You will still need to use at least one drying agent to get the final powder.

Complex powder- requires different ingredients in various quantities.

Some powders are compound powders or mixes that you craft from other powders. Upcoming VFP sub-mods will provide more compound powders either from new food sources or from tie-ins with other third-party mods.

Compound powder- a mixture of several simple powders.

Example Uses:

Powders are used to craft some non-food items, but in general they are used in foods and drinks. In particular, food powder is often the flexible ingredient in a basic shared recipe like creamed soup or gelos. You change the flavor of the output by changing the food powder ingredient. For instance you can change:

this  to  this milk drink…or,

this  to  this gelo…or,

this  to this cream soup.

Bits O’ Heat

A lot of the VFP recipes require you to smelt (or “cook”) an uncooked version of the final food so you can gain Xp. However, VFP also has many recipes that are smelt-free where you convert uncooked items to a final cooked, edible item straight on the crafting table. To add a tiny dose of reality that the ingredients for more complex recipes are cooked and not magically converted, you will need to add a bit o’ heat as an ingredient on the crafting table. Like the portions of water or milk, a bit o’ heat is obtained from a larger source, in this case a bucket of lava or another fuel.

A bucket of lava gives you 64 bits o’ heat.

Example: using a bit o’ heat in the recipe for broth on a crafting table.

Best Way To Make Bits o’ Heat

Converting a bucket of lava directly to bits o’ heat is straightforward but is absolutely not the best use of a bucket of lava as we’re limited to at most 64 bits per recipe. In order to get the equivalent uses of heat from a lava bucket on the crafting table as you would in a furnace, you should first convert the lava into intermediate sized portions called bits o’ lava sand.

Crafting lava sand from any kind of sand and a lava bucket.

Now that you have the lava sand you can craft bits o’ heat from that so that a single bucket of lava will produce 128 bits o’ heat for use on the crafting table– a slightly larger number of uses that even a furnace.

Short on Lava Buckets?

You can also obtain bits o’ heat from other burnable fuels like coal, charcoal, logs, or blaze-rods. However, refined wooden items (like planks and wooden tools) are not convertible.

Use a cutter to portion a piece of coal into bits o’ heat.

Batch Crafting with Liquids

The standard Minecraft milk bucket, water bucket, and water bottles are not stackable which makes them a pain-in-the-tuckus for crafting large batches of any recipe that uses them. The vanilla “water bottle” isn’t even really a water bottle — it’s water meant for brewing purposes (a potion bottle) that food mods tend to use because it’s readily available.

Painful. Make only ONE gelo at a time using a potion bottle.

VFP’s addresses the stacking issue in two ways: first, by using portions like bit o’ water and bottles of milk, we avoid this problem in many of our recipes; second, we’ve included an actual bottle of water item that you can drink from, stack in inventories, and use as a foundation for flavored drinks like fizzy drinks and teas. To force VFP recipes that need a bottle of water to accept either type of water bottle (if possible), change the ‘allow_potionitem_as_plain_water’ configuration option to TRUE.

Not painful. Make a stack of gelos at once if you please!

To get our bottles of water, you’ll need to first make a VFP empty bottle like below. Note the recipe is very similar to the vanilla glass bottle recipe, but with our mod-specific bit o’ water stuck in the middle. You also get twice as many of our bottles (6 per recipe) as you do for the vanilla recipe.

Craft a batch of empty bottles.

You fill the empty bottles in bulk using a crafting table and buckets of water or, even better, ice blocks. If you’ve got an ice farm or ready access to a snowy biome, you can use blocks of ice which are stackable and better for auto-crafting instead of water buckets. As of now you cannot fill our bottles of water from a cauldron as you’d be limited to filling three bottles before having to refill the cauldron. By using a crafting table, you can craft many more bottles without leaving the table, and you get four not three bottles of water from each bucket of water.

 -or even better-

Rock Salt and Natron (Sodium Bicarbonate)

VFP adds a couple of new “ores” to the standard Minecraft game. The main new ore is called rock salt and you use it to create refined salt for use in food preparation. You get rock salt crystals when you mine a rock salt block. Each crystal crafts to six large refined salt portions which you use directly in recipes for salted meats. Most other recipes use an even smaller portion, a bit o’ salt, which you get from the larger portion.
Refined salt is used to craft items like salted pork (ham), salted cod, and taffy.

Two secondary ores, natron and trona, are also generated by VFP but in lesser quantities to rock salt; from both you can obtain sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) and from natron you get a variant of drying agent that you can use for dehydrating large amounts of cooked meats for storage.

Baking soda is used to craft items like frying batter mix and carbonated water.

Currently there is no significant level restriction on where the new ores will generate although the ore generation is limited to just the Overworld dimension for everything but rock salt; you will not find any non-salt ores in the Nether or the End.

Natron like rock salt can generate anywhere smooth stone can generate (they both replace stone in the generation process). Trona however, will only spawn in relation to rock salt and is consequently much much harder to find.

New Mob Drops

VFP adds some new animal drops to the standard Minecraft game. The VFP animal drops will add to the regular drops for the large farm mobs like pigs and cows, and will introduce something new for bats, squid, wolves, horses, llamas, and even polar bears. If you can actually catch the little buggers, bats will give you bat meat, small bones, and even guano for fertilizing your crops (yes, bat poop) . Harvesting pigs will give you new meat items for your pantry and you can enable meat drops from horses as well.
Example: pigs drop hocks and pigtails, calves drop stomach lining and small bones.

Example: horses drop meat and tears, bats drop meat and poop.

Butchering Tool

To ensure you always get the new animal drops, use a butchering axe; otherwise, the new items may or may not get dropped as that’s randomly selected by the game. A butchering axe is very easy to make but has a fairly limited durability and cannot be enchanted. Note that a butchering axe is effective only on animals and squash like pumpkins and melons. You cannot use it as a weapon against other players or hostile mobs (no mater what the tooltip says).

Craft a butchering axe from flint and a stick [MC-1.12.2, use JEI to get specific recipe for your mod’s version]

A butchering axe doesn’t only help with new animal drops, it increases the efficiency of existing animal drops as well. This means you get more food for each animal killed with this tool.

Horses Are Special

VFP adds several new drops from horses some of which are very useful if you play in a peaceful mode where you can still die. Horses are hard to breed and farm, so killing one should provide a collection of drops commensurate with that difficulty. VFP sets up horses to drop these items in addition to leather; remember to use a butchering axe to get all of them per kill:

  • Meat – (Always) Can be eaten raw or cooked for more nutrition
  • Bone – (Random) Can be used for bonemeal or gelatin
  • Tear – (Random, uncommon) Can be used to brew regeneration potions
  • Hoof – (Random) Can be used to create sticky slime balls
  • Sweat – (Random, uncommon) Can be used to brew strength potions

Getting all drops from a horse at once.

Turning on horse drops in configuration file (disabled by default):

# Set to true to enable all VFP drops from killing horses….
    B:include_horse_drops=true
